Curvy

Q. What style of pants would best suit my curvy figure?
Stylist advice
Don't be afraid of wearing pants that highlight your legs. A black skim-leg pait will make you appear slimmer than if you wore a wide-leg style. Make sure you buy a pair that has a low waistband, because it will make your butt appear half the size - very clever! Wearing a loose fitting top will help to balance your outfit and hide any troublesome tummy problems you have.

"I want skinny length jeans that work for my shape, not against it. I have hips that make jeans shopping the worst experience ever! I think skinny jeans make me look bigger in the hips and thighs, so I leave them for little people" Mara, 26, Senior advertising designer
Our verdict:
You can wear skinny jeans, just make sure they're sturdy dark denim. And look for some fading on the knee to distract from the hips. A blousy top is the most flattering style for you.

Pear Shaped

Maxi dresses balance curvy hips and give the illusion of height. Show off your back in a style with a cut-out or low back.

Choose a dress with floaty layers and shoestring straps to draw attention to your face and smile!

Halterneck dresses attract people's eyes towards your shoulders, arms and collarbones.

Q. I'm pear shaped. What can I do to detract from my heavier bottom half?
Stylist advice

Asymmetrical pieces are right on trend, they draw people's attention away from your bottom-half. The ruffle adds volume to your top and balances out your hips. Buy pants with a little bit of extra length so that they bunch up at the ankles slightly - this will help balance your frame. You should always wear tops that skim over your tummy, as tight tops will accentuate your hips.

Petite

Q. I am really short. What can I do to make myself look taller?

Stylist advice

There are great news because platform shoes are 'in'. Its all about elongating your lower half: A high heel and a short hemline will add height. Wear something high-waisted to give the appearance of longer legs. Also, draw attention away from your small frame by adding a point of interest like tie-dye - a huge trend for summer.

Lengthen Legs
"I need a miracle to find a pair of jeans that will make my legs look longer. I often wear cropped jeans, thinking they will have the desired effect" Lauren, 22, Cosmo Intern
Our Verdict:
"Cropped jeans are a no- no for short legs, as the eye focuses on the only bit of flesh that's visible. Classic denims in one colour draw the eyes down and give the illusion of length.

Big Busted

Picture
A V-neck dress breaks up the chest area and draws the eyes down. Dresses with thick straps are also a good option.

Sweetheart necklines cup your bust in a nice way, and a long dress in a block colour looks cool and classy.

Try a strapless dress with a detailed bust - the higher the neckline, the less you'll feel like you're going to spill out

Q. I'm quite big-busted is there any way I can hide that?
Stylist advice

The scoop neck or V-neck line in a diagonal stripe will help to minimise your big bust. Also, cap or three quarter sleeves will reduce the look of your bust because they draw attention to wear the sleeve ends. Avoid anything with short-sleeves, as they finish in-line with your bust. A drawstring at your waist will highlight the narrowest part of your body, creating an hourglass curve.

Hourglass Figure

If you're not mad about showing off your arms, choose a dress with sleeves and add a belt -it's a great way to emphasise your waist.

Prefer separates? Go for a full skirt that nips in at the waist with an asymmetrical top in rich, dark tones.

An empire line dress with detailing below the bust will draw the eyes up and balance hips.

Q. I have an hourglass figure. What styles would flatter my body?
Stylist advice
The hourglass figure, which was once seen as retro by fashionistas, has been given a noughties twist - so celebrate your curves! Marilyn Monroe had an hourglass figure and she was one of the worlds greatest sex symbols. Wear a ruffle skirt, as it will hide any unwanted lumps and bumps. And a wide belt with funky detailing is also the way to go, as it will draw attention to your tiny middle.

Column Shaped

Picture
If you're straight up and down, try a voluminous dress, which gives you instant shape. A high neckline also suits you.

A floaty dress gives the illusion of curves in all the right places.

Bold graphics look awesome, but make sure the print isn't too big, as it'll draw attention away from your height.

Tall and thin

Picture
Try drop waisted styles - your height means you can definitely pull off a 1920s flapper inspired frock.

Go all out with a floor length gown in a neutral colour - it'll show off your height, without making you look gangly.

Keep an eye out for detailed hemlines - they'll draw attention to your long legs.

Apple Shaped

Picture
Look for strapless floaty frocks with a narrow bodice to give you definition up top, without clinging to your tummy.

A dress with a fuller skirt in a fabric that's not too slinky or stiff will balance your shape

If you're bigger around the middle, choose a dress that's boldly coloured and busy on top e.g off the shoulder clothing
